BEST MOVIE I'VE SEEN ALL YEAR.

Seriously, so, so good. Gus Van Sant is gshjdlghjgjlds amazing, and I liked Milk even better than Elephant, which was in that dreamy style I love. Milk wasn't dreamy (for the most part) but it was...basically perfect.

So yeah, according to me: Milk = Best Picture

But then again, I haven't seen Four Christmases yet.

I need 5 more movies to meet my movie goals!!

This was the kind of stuff TV-dads would tell you was character-building.

That was what I said to Adam Gozman, actually. It was basically the first thing I ever said to him. We were pounding a brick in place together, taking turns. There was dust everywhere, in my eyes. He started laughing when I said that, character-building, and then he started coughing and he was like,

"Fuck character-building."

flourish told me I was being really secretive about what my nanowrimo novel was about...I'm not trying to be secretive, really, I'm just not very good at describing my WsIP.

The story so far is what the 16 year old narrator, Dillon, has chosen to tell us about his life. His Mom lost her job and nursing license after she killed a patient; his Dad and brother are virtual strangers, finally back from England, where they have been for the past twelve years; his new friend, Adam, is the class jerk, but that's why Dillon likes him so much; and someone keeps calling and leaving messages for Dillon, but he's not telling us much about that part.

Here are some snippets I kind of liked.

And, oh dear, they are all unedited.

"Do you know why you're here, Dillon?" he asked.

"Because I'm in trouble?" I guessed, letting my voice go high on the end like I couldn't fathom why, maybe like I was a little nervous.

"You're not in trouble, Dillon," he told me, "Not yet anyway."

I hated the way he was doing that thing with my name, appending it to every sentence like a tic or something. I wondered if that was something they teach you in guidance counselor school, if it had some hidden effect I was only aware of self consciously. Maybe it was supposed to make me trust him, make Mr. Bodoni appear to be my friend while he extracted whatever information he needed to suspend or expel me or whatever he was trying to do.

"Is it because I'm skipping school?" I asked, before I had a chance to think that one over.

I guessed the name-repeating mind trick must have been working after all.

"Are you skipping school?" Mr. Bodoni asked and I thought, aw, hell, I shouldn't have said a word. It was like how they told you never to talk to the police. You'd just wind up saying something stupid.

*

Six A.M.

It was kind of amazing that Lionel could even wake up that early. The way I pictured my brother was kind of a caricature of how he actually was; Lionel, the lazy musician, playing the same song on his guitar over and over again, half sitting, half lying in his favorite beanbag chair. I guess that's the only way you can really arrange yourself in a beanbag chair. He'd either be wearing sweats or yesterday's jeans, some grody t-shirt. In my head, he owned maybe three t-shirts, and he just wore them over and over again. Lionel, out of bed that early? On a Sunday of all days? I guess it didn't matter that it was Sunday; Lionel wasn't in school anymore and he didn't have a job, all the days probably ran together for him

*

Mom killed someone.

She killed someone.

If that's not the ultimate fuck-up, I don't know what is. I wondered for about a second if that was something I'd be able to hold over her in every argument from now on. Like, if the cosmos shifted and I did get some girl pregnant, could I just retort with But at least I didn't kill anyone! That really bugged me, that whole thought, the fact that I was even mean enough to come up with it. It was like an Adam thought. Yeah, I could probably see Adam yelling at his mom, saying that. Even though I've never met his mom and as far as I know, she never killed anyone.

*

The first time I drove this car and shifted into park I tried to get the key out to hand to Lionel and it wouldn't budge. Lionel, the key is stuck! Did I break it? Did I break your car? He laughed, showed me how you had to push it in, then pull it out, which sounds kind of haha sexy or maybe like the hokey-pokey in retrospect.

*

"Can I just take one?" I asked.

"Uh, sure but..." He twisted his mouth into a smile; I could probably count all his teeth. "Three is more fun."

I figured he knew better than I did, so I went into the kitchen to get some water. I popped the pills in my mouth and they tasted bitter and gross immediately, so I stuck my face under the faucet and got the water that way, without having to look for a glass. I swallowed and wiped my mouth. Adam's house had a window right above the kitchen sink and I could see my own reflection in it as I choked down the pills. Why the hell did I do that, I wondered?

*

I'd sort of zoned out for a second, but now that I was thinking about it I could hear all of Adam's computer gaming noises and it sounded kind of fun, like I was in an arcade.

"Adam," I said.

"Yeah?" The noises stopped; he must have paused the game.

"Are we friends?"

"Yeah, of course we're friends."

I let my eyes close.

"Cool."

Do you want my nanowrimo soundtrack? GET IT HERE!
debate highlights

Highlights from last night's debate in which I yelled SHUT THE FUCK UP, JOHN MCCAIN more times than in the previous debates put together:

Joe The Plumber. Again, and again, and again.

John McCain getting really butthurt about Obama's "negative campaign." <s>OMG YOUR WHITE MALE PRIVILEGE IS SHOWING.</s>

McCain putting finger quotes around "the woman's health" as part of the abortion debate. Classy!

McCain blowing his line about gold-plated cadillac healthcare plans which cover things like "cosmetic surgery and transplants." We hope he meant "hair transplants" (as in, a dig at Biden per the previous debate). Not that it makes it much better. Because who has health insurance that covers those?

Obama often repeated himself in response to McCain's accusations about his policies...we heard 95% many, many times. I think the fact that Obama was able to counter McCain simply by repeating himself shows how petty and pointless McCain's jabs were.

Some undecided voter (hurf) said she thought Obama laid out his health care plan better in this debate than he had before. I'd disagree with this. I'm still not totally sold on Obama's plan, but it's less of a clusterfuck than McCain's, at least.

Yeah, it would be nice to cut everyone's taxes but then, where is the money coming from? My very-conservative grandma said the other day, "Well, I don't mind paying more taxes. Someone's got to pay them, right?" If you're in that over-a-quarter-mil/year tax bracket, it's likely losing your Bush era tax cuts is not going to force you to alter your lifestyle. Whereas if you're in a middle-class bracket (Obama's 95%) you've probably already had to alter it a little.

Ok, I'll shut up now. Peace.

oh, so when I was on the street today, a guy from HRC said,

"did you know it's still legal in 31 states to fire someone just for being gay?"

I totally didn't know that there was nothing protecting GLBT people in the language of the federal anti- discrimination laws. I had to look it up because I figured there must be some umbrella term or something in there, but there's not :O

But if a case of someone being fired because of their sexual orientation ever made it to the Supreme Court, that would probably be found unconstitutional, right? Like, shouldn't that be protected in the constitution? :/

I did learn that some states have laws against discrimination because of weight.

It would be nice to have unlimited bandwidth and a large storage space as I'd like to host art samples/comic stuff. I haven't worked out how much I can spend, but $10/mo seems like it should get me started.

I looked at doteasy and godaddy and they both seemed like decent, cheap options, unless I'm missing something dire here.
COMCAST, WHY DO YOU SUCK??

UGGGH I CAN'T REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I WAS THIS PISSED OFF

OK, SO I GET A BILL IN THE MAIL TODAY TELLING ME MY COMCAST PAYMENT IS OVERDUE

FUNNY THING IS, I'M SET UP TO AUTOPAY AND IT'S WORKED SO FAR. SO I GO ONLINE TO LOOK AT MY ACCOUNT AND IT SAYS:

Payment Due Date AUTOPAY $ 59.98

AUTO PAYMENT WILL BE MADE ON 10/09/08

OK, SO THE PROBLEM IS...TODAY IS 10/10/08. AND TODAY, THEY TACKED ON A LATE FEE!

WTFFFFF. SO I CALL CUSTOMER CARE AND ALTHOUGH THE FIRST PERSON I TALK TO SEEMS COMPETENT (he was like "That is weird, it looks like it should have paid") HE TRANSFERS ME TO SOMEONE IN BILLING WHO KEEPS ASKING

"how can I hep you today?"

"yes but, how can I hep you today?"

EVEN THOUGH I HAVE REPEATEDLY EXPLAINED THE SITUATION TO HER. I'M NOT CONVINCED SHE SPEAKS ENGLISH VERY WELL. THEN SHE PUTS ME ON HOLD FOR LIKE AN HOUR AND COMES BACK WITH:

"Well, the autopayment doesn't work if you don't have sufficient funds in your account. So you must not have sufficient funds. You need to go online and pay it manually from another account."

UH, MAYBE THIS IS SOMETHING THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO SAY TO YOU? LIKE FROM A SCRIPT? BUT I JUST FOUND IT REALLY INSULTING. LIKE, DON'T YOU THINK I WOULD HAVE CHECKED THAT BEFORE I CALLED YOU CLOWNS? THIS IS THE ONLY EXPLANATION SHE OFFERS ME EVEN THOUGH I KEEP SAYING THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT BECAUSE I'M LOOKING AT MY BANK STATEMENT ONLINE ~*RIGHT NOW*~ AND I HAVE MORE THAN 59.98 K THX.

SO I TELL HER THERE'S NO WAY I DON'T HAVE SUFFICIENT FUNDS IN THAT ACCOUNT, CAN I TALK TO YOUR SUPERVISOR? AND SHE PUTS ME ON HOLD FOR ANOTHER YEAR AND COMES BACK WITH

"Ok, in the next 24 hours someone will check on your bank account. They'll call you, and if you have sufficient funds, we'll erase the late fee."

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?

I'M SOOOOOO PISSED RIGHT NOW.

so I guess this is "THE CONTROVERSIAL SURVEY"

IDK, people keep reposting this. I filled it out and I guess I'm not as opinionated as I thought. HERE, HAVE SOME HYPNOCAT TO GO ALONG WITH.

[01] Do you have the guts to answer these questions and re-post as The Controversial Survey?

LOL.

[02] Would you do meth if it was legalized?

Noooo no no no. It'd pretty far down on the list of things I'd spend my money on, ever. I probably woudn't even do it if it were free.

03] Abortion: for or against it?

I'd never get an abortion unless my life was in danger or there was something seriously wrong with the baby. But I don't think the government should dictate what you can and can't do in this area.

[04] Do you think the world would fail with a female president?

Female president...OF THE WORLD? Um, this question is stupid. I don't think women are inferior to men, if that's what this is asking? Next.

[05] Do you believe in the death penalty?

Not really. Maybe some people deserve it, but who are we to judge?

[06] Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?

Yes. SO MUCH SAFER THAN ALCOHOL IN EVERY WAY, COME ON D:

[07] Are you for or against premarital sex?

People need to decide what's right for them. Though the term itself is pretty hetero-normative and kind of irks me when I hear it.

[08] Do you believe in God?

Yes.

[09] Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?

Yes. And I think (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, JOE BIDEN...AND EVERYONE ELSE INVOLVED IN THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE*) worrying about the term "marriage" getting redefined is retarded. By calling it "gay marriage" or "same sex marriage" YOU'RE ALREADY USING A DIFFERENT TERM. And people who care about the "redefinition" thing are never going to call it just "marriage," so why not let everyone else have that term? DOES NOT COMPUTE.

[10] Do you think it's wrong that so many Hispanics are illegally moving to the USA?

I think it's part of a larger problem that's more "wrong." (The wording on this question makes me uncomfortable. Anyone feel that?)

[11] A twelve year old girl has a baby, should she keep it?

Well she shouldn't be forced to give it up, provided she has family willing to help her take care of it, I guess...

[12] Should the alcohol age be lowered to eighteen?

Ok, but everyone should have to take an alcohol safety course to get a "drinking license." I think people who are stupid about booze at 18 will still be stupid at 21. Remember that "21 shots" trend?

[13] Should the war in Iraq be called off?

CALL IT OFF.

[14] Assisted suicide is illegal: do you agree?

I'm ambivalent. (Sorry.)

[15] Do you believe in spanking your children?

Not really.

[16] Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?

Probably.

[17] Who do you think would make a better president? McCain or Obama?

<s>Ron Paul</s> Obama.

[18] Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?

Judge away <3

*But especially Joe Biden, since IL him otherwise.
So I thought I might turn off the CAPSLOCK and clarify some things about my flabbergasted Sarah Palin-related post because this is still bothering me...

I don't have anything personal against Sarah Palin. Obviously I don't know her, and the details from her personal/family life are far less troubling than her political positions. I've heard a lot of people saying "Oh, there are good things and bad things about her" but even after pouring through her wikipedia article I'm not convinced there's anything I like about her. Ok, I guess that's not true...I do think it takes a certain strength of character to find out the kid you're pregnant with has Down syndrome and choose to have and raise him anyway--I would never attack her for that decision. However I don't think it's right to want to force everyone in that position to make the same choice you did.

As for the situation with her daughter being pregnant, I do NOT think SP should be held responsible for "not instilling moral values" in her or any bullshit like that...I DO think she should be held responsible for not providing her daughter with the proper information re: contraception (if this is the case).

I really liked what Obama said* on the subject...basically, yes, let's teach our kids about abstinence, but let's also let em know about condoms and birth control. Yes, he used the phrase "I don't want [my daughters] punished with a baby," which, okay people are getting offended over. But if you actually try to explain why that's offensive it kind of falls apart...he's not saying all babies are punishment, but when you're a young mother in high school with an unplanned baby, it can certainly be a burden--especially knowing it could have been prevented. So while I have no beef with how the Palins are handling Bristol's pregnancy now, I couldn't help thinking about (as the daughter of a quite conservative family myself) how these events came to pass in the first place. HENCE ALL THE CAPSLOCKING AND CRAZY PILL COMMENTS.

Wow, that was a lot of words. How about a succinct list about why I don't like Sarah Palin now (since I keep saying it anyway)? Ok, here we go:

She's "as pro-life as any candidate can be." This means no abortions for rape and incest victims. IF YOUR DAD RAPES YOU AND YOU GET PREGNANT, SARAH PALIN THINKS YOU SHOULD BE FORCED TO HAVE THE BABY (DOES THIS SHOCK?) If she had it her way, all abortions would be illegal, save only "when the mother's life is in danger." Which also means, I guess, no abortions in a situation where you know your baby will be born dead, or die shortly after birth. Infant hospice care ftw...except...no.

She thinks global warming is "not man made." Which means we can't do anything to prevent it, right?

She wants to teach creationism in schools.

Being from a state that "borders" Russia does not automatically give you foreign policy experience. Sorry.

Ok, I lied, I can think of one good thing to say about her:

She does acknowledge that methamphetamines are "a greater social threat than cannabis." That's sensible.

(sauce here and here.)

Wow, so many words. Props to anyone who managed to slog through this entry. Please let me know if any of my information is correct and if you want to know why I don't like any of these stances, feel free to ask. I probably won't throw down with you though. IDK, maybe if I'm bored.

*(Here's Obama. Sorry, but I can't find a link to this that's not from the right: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbZJYWjkAPo)

So my macbook has been acting up in some bad ways lately, and I'm wondering where I can take it for an...idk, tune-up? Since I'm not a Reed student anymore, ETC seems to be out.

The problems in order of importance:

Airport has all but stopped picking up wireless signals. I can be 6 feet away from the router but only get the weakest of signals. I have to use an ethernet cable at home now and I can't reliably connect to other wireless networks. This happened kind of suddenly about five or six days ago but it seems like it might be getting worse.

The click button on my touchpad is all kinds of sticky. It will either double click or not click at all. I'm kind of hoping it's just gunked up and this can be fixed by cleaning...

My battery or battery sensor must be fucked up because it'll do things like completely drain while the computer is inactive, stop working and shut off when it says it has like 30% left (once I plug it in, it says zero), not register that its charging (it's doing this right now, heh) or WORK FINE when it says I have 0% left. HUH??

Can anyone recommend me a place to take it that won't take all my money? Or are there easy fixes for any of these problems?

I am so awesome with a camera, guys

So I tried to take some pictures at the Camp Adams retreat and I am really, really shitty with a camera. I'm not sure if it's that I just don't understand how to use it yet, or if I actually have zero talent as a photographer. Here are the baddest ones, for your viewing pleasure.

(Ok, these are actually the ones that turned out best, but give me some wiggle room here)

I went hiking with Margaret and her family and took creepy pictures like a stalker.

There was a puppy. Lisa and her boys get to keep it! Kid on the left is Oliver, I think, who is not Lisa's. All the kids there were so cute :D And there were a lot of kids.

Oh yeah, and the puppy was really tiny. Like, you could step on it, tiny. AWWWWW.

Camp Adams is BEAUTIFUL, btw, which you wouldn't know from my two shitty pictures of the forest.
